Dropping Back Into Town March 25 2011, 0 Comments

Weather is back to bomber spring conditions for the moment.  Took a quick ride across town to pick up some helmet foam for the next chapter in the journey.  Ran into some old friends, and then took the high road home.

Break in the Rain March 24 2011, 0 Comments

Better weather today while there is a break between storms. Quick mid day run for some supplies, Still plenty of clouds locking the snow into the mountains And then a quick ride into the hills to get the legs heated up I am not sure what this series of storms will do for all of you back east, but I cannot image it is going to bring spring here any earlier.  Play outside, but try to stay warm and dry.

Between the Drops March 23 2011, 0 Comments

I thought I could make it to the mid-week Farmer's market to pick up some beef and veggies before the next wave of rain hit.  I could see it coming in behind me from the west an knew it was going to be close getting home dry. There was snow peeking out through the clouds on the Topa bluffs, but not easy to catch with the camera I had with me. Making it there was fairly dry, the way home was another matter. The Patagonia Men's Houdini® performed perfectly as did my Rainlegs chaps.  Both pieces of rain gear are perfect for the light rain quick ride sort of thing.  This test was only 6 or 7 miles in drizzle, but that is all you need most of the time here in southern California.  Anything more and these will wet out and then through, all dry and happy this time though.

Before the Storm March 22 2011, 0 Comments

Another round or rain and possibly hail is scheduled for the next few days.  I headed out towards Lake Casitas hoping to get some shots of the snow on the mountains bofre the clouds set in. The cloud line was already too low, blocking the snow that I had seen from town earlier in the morning.  The rivers were all running high, with more rain on the way things could get interesting. I had wanted to make it to the high point on the west side of the lake, but wind and time were conspiring against me.  Still an incredibly beautiful day to get out for a ride.

Getting the Shot March 18 2011, 0 Comments

I love making photographs.  I ride for fun, transportation and exorcise.  While out I am always thinking about the photo, it is the way I see things, saving data in the background for when an angle of view and the light may come together just right.  Often times this will help guide the direction I head out on a ride.  Sometimes it works as planned, often times I catch things unplanned during the ride and get shots like this gem on Wednesday, This morning on the other hand was hazy, I woke up late and was hoping to just get a few miles in and see if anything presented itself.  Heading back home with a little extra time I looked up and saw the tree at one of my favorite turns, Just a little left of the sign you can see the eucalyptus up on the hill above town.  Inspired, Five minutes and a couple hundred feet of climbing later I was set up and ready, bagged the shot and made it home. Have fun this weekend, play outside and enjoy your family.

Spring in the Country March 16 2011, 0 Comments

This years rains, with the now warmer weather is bringing out our short window of green and Flowers. Canada Larga Rd is an oasis of beauty unbelievably close to the city.  My favorite micro-tour.

Why We Shouldn’t Bike with a Helmet March 15 2011, 0 Comments

I will seldom post a "hey look at this" but I liked this one. Mikael Colville-Andersen giving a speech at TEDx in Copenhagen on Why We Shouldn’t Bike with a Helmet.  Grant at Rivendell tipped me to this through their Blog.  This is the most concise expression I have yet seen on brining bicycles back into our culture as everyday transportation and not just play things or exercise equipment.   Enjoy, and spread the word.  Actively riding in your own community every day will help to improve the quality of your rides, be the front edge of the rising tide. Regularly scheduled posting will catch up later this week, Daylight Saving Time is spinning me sideways still.

Stuffing a Bicycle Frame Bag March 14 2011, 0 Comments

What do you put in a frame bag for daily use?  Today it was my Houdini jacket, one dozen eggs and two avocados. Most days is has my Gorillapod with extended legs as well as the Houdini, On longer rides can get a 2L Platypus bag of water in there with the jacket and a first aid kit with room to spare (I still need to grab a picture of that). The most asked question by people on the street suprisingly is, "do you keep a fly rod in there"? and if I was going camping it would be the perfect place to keep the tent poles. When I first made the bag I knew it was going to see more than touring duty, but it turns out to be incredibly useful every day.

Breakfast Date March 12 2011, 0 Comments

While passing through the Harbor we witnessed another Tsunami surge, the tide in this picture is about 4 or 5 feet higher than it should be.  It came up and drained back out in 6 minutes or so, pretty incredible to watch.  Apparently this has been ongoing since 9am yesterday Then breakfast and a toodle around town on the way home. Thanks for Oma and Opie to watch the baby, It was a great morning
